3rd Block CW -- Is your online generation stuck on the web?

Your generation has been called the MySpace generation. It is obvious that you spend much more time online than previous generations, mainly because you have more access, more technology, and maybe more desire to sit at a computer screen than most others. Is this true? Do you resent that label? For you personally, how do you see yourself as a writer in the online world?

Specifically, respond by explaining how much and where you write online. Do you chat, IM, surf, what? Remember, no full names. First names only.

Then, once you've posted your original piece, go back, read others' posts, and reply to at least one other student's writing.

We write online a lot more than previous generations because we have the internet available. We Chat, E-Mail, IM, because it is easy and fun to do all that stuff. We aren't stuck on it we just use it alot. Travis

I dont really write on the internet very much i have it at home but i dont type to anyone or post on message boards or anything.
i mostly use the internet to look things up or use the computer to type a paper. I agree that our generation uses the internet more than any ohter we have the most access to it.

Internet should be used for an educational tool. too many people are using the internet these days for music, games, interaction with friends, and pornography. That just doesn't sit to well with me.

I believe that this statement is true, that we are the myspace generation. There are many people from our school and from schools all over the world that are on myspace. I think that it is funny and scary at the same time, because even though we are technology inclined we still don't know fully well how to protect ourselves from people getting our information. One day I was on myspace and I was looking arround through the people from our school and that was enought to scare me, the fact that so many of our highschool students post personal information about themselves all over the web.
When I am online all I do is check my e-mail and maybe talk to the one friend I have on myspace. Or do homework. I think that the internet is good and usefull but only when people use it correctly.

My generation seems to be big on the whole internet and chatting thing. I used to be, but I have a job and it's hunting season, so I don't get online all that much anymore. Maybe sometimes to check my email or surf the web, but that's just about it. Every once in a while I will get on to play games or get some info for an assignment. Like this poetry assignment, I am going to have to be on the internet quite a bit to get it done.

I don't think it's a fair assessment of teenagers as a whole to label us the "MYspace generation". Yes, some people do spend excessive amounts of time on the internet, but not everyone does. Some people don't use it at all, some don't even have it, and some just use it a s helpful resource. I personally go on usually to do homework, check e-mails, and get ideas. I do have aol and msn messengers, but I don't use them extensively. The biggest purpose of having those is to keep in touch with people I can't see on a daily basis- like my old high school friends in California. I don't even have a myspace, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't.

I write online basically by surfing the web for school and for fun. I play games sometimes when I'm bored but I use the computer mainly for school use. Writing papers, finding information, etc. I used to chat online with MSN a lot but I feel like I have grown out of that now. Sometimes I will get on to see if someone is on that I want to talk to or sometimes I will need to ask someone and it will be easier to find them online then finding their phone number. I've never gone to a chat room, that is dumb.

I personally spend at least an hour a day online. I spend some of the time instant messaging people and some of the time doing a combination of homework, email and searching web sites. I like spending time on the internet because it is an easy way to communicate with my friends and extended family who live in other states and other countries. -Reed

I believe that we will use more of the internet in the future to write things and more technology, such as instead of typing we can have a computer that knows what we are saying by listening to us talk and it will print it out like that, and record it to a piece of holographic paper or put it in a book and you could have books read to you and teach you how to read, that would be alot better of a future because our kids could learn so much more from those kinds of things than from people who dropped out of school.

I do believe that this is a true statement, but it is not just for personal reasons. For most of the classes that we have, we need to have access to the internet to find out information that we might need. So we might have a "label", but we need the internet to do the things that we need to learn.

The only time that I right online is if I am sending an email to someone, and I only write small amounts, I don't write stories. I also write on the internet when I am "IMing" my friends.

When I am online I usually surf the web, chat on msn messenger and check my e-mail. I only use my e-mail to check for college e-mails and e-mails from my dad. But other than that I usually only get online when I am bored or when I need to do a school assignment. With me being so busy between school and cheerleading that I rarely find time to get on. If I do, I get on at night.

Yes, you could say that I resent the label of generation "on-line". Not that it in itself is really that bad, but the implications that go along with that label such as:
Laziness
Hyped-up crazy kids
and other such things.
It is true that "our generation" is on-line more than past generations. This is as stupidly obvious of a comment as kids in the 80's watching more TV than those in the 60's. There is more of it around...again, easier access.
I myself had a hard time navigating around this site. That is proof enough that not all "on-line generationers" are hep to technology.
I have an e-mail account that I use to "talk" to about three people. I refuse to use "cutsey" little phrases and abbreviations as "lol", btw, brb and c u l-8-ter. These common usages are an indicator of laziness and crazy, computer-hype kids, but I exclude myself from them.
(As to Myspace, I have seen my brother use, but other than that, have no idea what it's about)

Me,I personally believe that that is a very true statement. Out generation is a myspace generation. I have a myspace web page but only because others have it. I have an email also but for college purposes. I dont really like to sit in front of a computer screen for hours but others my age, I know do. Games and the internet are the life of people nowdays including older adults. people cant get away. They are all addicted.

Because I don't have access to the internet at my house I don't fit the lable well. When I have the oppertunity I surff the web and sometimes I chat when I play games like solitair but never IM or go into chat rooms. Also most of my e-mail stuff is from colleges and not from or to friends so most of the writing I do online is more formal. As a generation however I do think that a lot of people are stuck on the web and most don't use it well either. Putting out personal info. Most people now have access also so I don't think that it is necessarily just our genersation we just caught on faster, other generations are catching up.

I have a fair ammount of internet experience, but not as much as many of my collegues. I have an email account, but I don't ever write people from it, I just get junk mail and I recieve discounts from the clothing stores I shop from. I probably open my email account once a month. I also have an MSN messanger, but I have not used it in probably a year. I used to use MSN every day, but it is not as much fun anymore. The only typing I do on the internet is on Myspace. I have a few friends on Myspace who I have not seen for a couple years and I send messages to them every once in a while. I use the internet mostly to shop, because we don't have anywhere to shop in La Grande.
I used to use email and MSN messanger when I was younger and it was more fun. These days I try to find other things to do with my time.

At home we have the internet, but are family shares the same e-mail address and it is usually only used for corressponding with family or misc. stuff. I don't chat on line or have a Myspace or Msn. Though I do enjoy surfing the web, and I use it for homework, it is not something I do everyday. Technology is a great thing, but i believe it should be used in modification. Your life shouldn't be centered around a computer or tv screen. What do you gain be surfing the web or playing video games all day?

In reply to Anica's Post, I totally agree with you and belive that what you are saying is true, that we do use the internet for almost all of our classes if not all of them.

Going along the lines of what Trevor said about using the internet for researching information for a paper, I think that plagerism in the form of people copying information from the internet is a major problem in our high school. Using the internet for research is perfectly fine as long as you cite the source. Come on people, don't be stupid, CITE THE SOURCE! -Reed

I think i will have to agree with samuel pornography is bad and people do misuse the internet sometimes. Even though they have all the blocks set up on these computers there not that hard to get past because some have blocks that others dont.

Well, I think this is a pretty smart class, for the most part. I mean personally I just don't see the whole point in this assignment in the first place. It is pretty sweet and everything, but some kids just might think that there is no point to even bother with doing this, or they really aren't "tech-savvy."

-Cody

in response to Chelisa-
I totally agree. Between school work, sports, clubs, working, and other activities, it's not like we have huge amounts of time to waste on the internet. My time online is a very very small minority of how I spend my time in general.
-Melisa

Anonymous said...

I agree with Melisa. It is true though that there are so many people obsessed with the computer, so I can see why we would be called the MySpace generation.
-austin (again)

Anonymous said...

Who told you this was the "tech-savy" class? And just because a lot of people are to lazy to bring their palms doesn't mean there's a technology hang up. Also the palm I have doesn't get internet so I don't think that the lable of online generation would be affected. Most people I know can get on the web from their cell phones though so that should just inforce the label...

The online generation is a correct label but of couse doesn't apply to everyone. I dont even have a computer at home. I use the schools and my aunts.

In reply to bbaxlhs....

We ourselves did not give us the label of being "tech savvy", and the 'my space' generation. Maybe people shouldn't label us before they really know who we are and what we use the computer for. By doing this assignment online, you are adding to the thoughts of people thinking we are the 'myspace' generation. Also, this assignment would've been the exact same on paper as it was on the computer screen.

-Katie

I agree with Melisa. At least for upper classmen; we don't seem to use the computer for stupid things as much anymore. To me it seems like it is all the younger classmen who are not over the MSN stage of their lives yet. I just think that it is stupid to label us as something like the Myspace generation, because it is a given that if the technology is there, people are going to use it.
-austin (again)

I myself am not much of the online generation as others are. the most i do online is search for game cheats and secerts thats it. see the myspace lable really bugs me, im not on a computer all that much. but hey what can we do to have people not call us the myspace generation.

I dont use a computer vary much mainly for work. Sometimes to play a couple of games but not vary often.I think if other generations had the technology they would us is just as much.I think others will always guestion the younger generation. steve

I'm with trev on this one. Im not much of a chit-chatter but i do use the internet to type papers and find out about stuff. I also agree that the reason we use the internet alot is because we have more access to it than any other generation.

In reply to BBAXLHS....

Sure we enjoy the computer and sometimes the palm pilots but no one called us 'Tech savvy' besides adults. This would be the exact same as if this assignment was on paper. Is the computer supposed to make us understand it better?
We shouldn't be the only ones labled the 'myspace generation' when teachers and such use the computers as much as we do. Why does that change things?

Chelisa

I agree with Reed's comment because the internet is something that you should have access to the internet and it is an easier way to get information about things that you need. And it can be a whole lot cheaper than having to make long distance phone calls to family and friends that live further away.

I dont really have anymore desire to sit in front of a computer than anyone else, its just that we are the first generation that has really been able to sit in front of the computer(modern coomputers).
I really dont resent being called the my space generation. We do have the tools available to us to talk and chat on the internet and older generations didnt have this so,they think were lazy i dont resent it i think its true.

I agree with Melisa comment, there is a great deal of us that us our technology extensively, but there is also the other half who knows how to deal with technology and still have a balanced. Of course the internet is great for homework and reasearch, and E-mail and msn for keeping in touch, and thats what it should be used for. It shouldn't be something that you spend all your time doing, such as jumping on the computer right after school and the stay there until you go to sleep.

I agree with Melisa. But I think that they pinpoint our generation as myspace because since technology has advansed, we use it to our advantage. But not everyone has the internet, when I did have it I used it to check my e-mail, instant message my friends in my home town and for homework assighnments. I wish I haf the internet so I could talk to my friends back in California too.

I agree with cody that most kids who work dont have time to get on the internet and chat with there friends. Since my first comment didn't get posted I will write another short version.
I do use the computer and internet probably close to a daily basis. Most of the work I do on the computer is for school. Either research, or typing up a paper. Every once in a while I will check to see if I have anything new on Myspace. I use Myspace mostly to talk to my friends who live out of town. I do have an email accoung, but I don't ever use it. That's the same with MSN messenger, I probably havn't been on there in a year.
I don't agree with our generation being called "internet savy" or the Myspace generation because I dont think we do use it that much. I agree that we use it more than in the past, but it is a given that if the technology is there and available people are going to use it.
