Your generation has been called the MySpace generation. It is obvious that you spend much more time online than previous generations, mainly because you have more access, more technology, and maybe more desire to sit at a computer screen than most others. Is this true? Do you resent that label? For you personally, how do you see yourself as a writer in the online world?
Specifically, respond by explaining how much and where you write online. Do you chat, IM, surf, what? Remember, no full names. First names only.
Then, once you've posted your original piece, go back, read others' posts, and reply to at least one other student's writing.

It is true, we do spend much more time on the net than other generations, I am apart of this generation, i do spend alot of time on the internet doing homework and personal stuff unlike someone like my mom or dad.
Montana
Yup, most definitly. Im mostly on at home a lot, on an intant messanger and e-mails so alot of personal time but i do use it for school work when there is that we can do online.
-Heather
Yeah this generation does spent a great amount of time on world wide web. We use it for things that we do on a daily basis. School, work, fun....... But i think that in the future generations of people will use it more than we have.
John
I don’t really spend a lot of time on the net. But while I’m online I’m usually at myspace.com or looking something up that I can actually use latter on in life. I don’t see why ever one likes being on line so much because it gets really old really fast. Jake
I do not resent this lable. We spend much more time researching info on the net than we do in text books, encyclopdias, and magizines. I use the internet mostly for surfing. My sisters are on for hours and are chating. They spend more time off the computer than i do on.
Derek
Well i think myspace is pretty much like hotmail and email stuff just a faster and easier way to send pics. i think its just better all around. myspace is cool its not my life though some people live on computers im not saying its a bad thing just that i dont. Jenny
I feel that we as a generation do spend more time surfing the net then the generations before us. But I don't feel that we should be labeled by it, not everyone I know spends time online and even if I don't resent the label I know some who may. When I and online I’m either On Celtic FC's site checking the scores of the latest match, or talking to my friends and family on MSN Messenger. I do spend some time on Myspace and some time on other random sites looking up information.
Jared
I don't use the internet for much other than school. When I am online not working on school stuff, I usually surf the web, shop, chat on msn messenger and check my e-mail. I don't go on the internet very much, because I don't have that much time. Between everything that I do, the internet is my last priority. When I go online just for fun, I only go online once or twice a week, and that is on the weekends.
~Aimey
I think that we do spend more time on the internet then we ever have in the past because of the reason that there is more technology out then ever before, I don't spend that much time on the internet and when i do go on the internet its to check my e-mails and to wirte back to friends and sometimes to do homework. The only other person that spent alot of time on the internet was my brother Heath, he was the one that was doing every thing from homework to chating and he was on ther for hours on end every day.
Tanner
It seems every class i have they expect you to do research on the internet, so I think that this is very true that we are an online generation. I also know that the time people spend on the internet doing personal stuff varies from person to person because of acessability, a person who doesnt have the internet probley doesnt spend much time on it.
Dena
Too much time spent on computers, no question. I use it as late night eentertainment in the middle of bad insomnia, when i have nothing to do, but too many kids spend hours updating their myspace page or chatting on MSN. Go meet some real people. And not just because they sit next to you at an internet cafe. Because coffeeshops are for wankers.
Alex
I'll be the first to admit, I do do a lot of online writing. Aside from an occasional email, I have spent a fare amount of time writing on the world wide web. When I write on the net, it is usually in the form of some sort of conversation.(For example, coordinating plans with teamates on games like "Battlefield 1942".)
I have also written in different internet forums, if there is ever a question you need answered in a day or so, just post it online, someone usually can help.
And the only other writing I do online would have to be email. Which I have done a lot of lately. Mainly because colleges now accept 'online applications' and that is easier--I think--than mailing a bunch of forms.

I agree that we are on the computers a lot more, and yes probably because theres more high tech things coming into our world and it makes things easy to purchace cause they go down in price when new things come in. Jenny
We do spend alot of our time on the internet but that is better than having kids doing other things that wouldnt be that great. I think that we are labled by what the see, and if they knew how long we spent on the internet the would see that alot of students arent on as much as they think. I only get on the internet sometimes and that is when my phone is dead or i know one of my friends will be on to ask them a question. katrina
Most of the 9th 10th and 11th grade class use MySpace. Even some of the 12 grader use it to but I have never used MySpace and dont intend to. I rarely even use and/or have even Yohoo.mail. I don't mind to be associated with the MySpace generation but it can be looked at as a good or a bad thing. Hopefully it is a good help for our generation. Rebekah
Jake is lying, i bet he spends alot of time on the internet but he says he doesnt because he doesnt want to become apart of the label of the net surfing geek like the rest of our generation
Montana
But i think that in the future generations of people will use it more than we have. I agree with this comment, because I think its just going to get worst as time goes on. Such as most school are using more technology to teach, there for pushes kids to use technology more and more. Jake
I believe that in the future, somebody will come up with a new way to do research and shopping, all the things we do online. We may come up with things to do on the internet that we take for granted. Own a business in a different country, maybe even do all of our shopping, and many others. The idea of having school and receiving a high school diploma may become more popular then we think.
Derek
To be honest with you I use my computer to type papers and essays. I use the internet to do research for those papers and essays. other than that I do not use my computer at all. This generation does spend alot of more time online than others, but I really don't. This took me five minutes to type, that should tell you something.
TOMMY
First of all let me say that I despise MySpace. So I'm not a fan of the label. But it is true that we spend more time on the internet than past generations. Maybe too much time, but that is debateable.
The internet is an incredible tool, that gives you access to many things. Some good, some not so good.
As a writer, I like it and loathe it. It is a great to self publish storys, essays or other works, and get great feedback. But it also gets extremly annoying going to sites and seeing phrases such as "i GOT pwned last nite in c0un73r s7r1k3 be4 i quiT." Much of this has come about do to IM, or video games.
Eric
yes, But anyone who had the stuff we do now days then you would do it to. No why would anyone what to take that in the bad way. I don't do emails so all I use the computer for is games and school work. Don't online bucause it take to much time.
rubin ha ha ha ha ha
I agree with you derek
we do spend a majority of our time researching topics on the internet because it is alot fast than to look through like six books to find one thing. its just another short cut to get things done. katrina
This is in response to Alex's comment:
"...too many kids spend hours updating their myspace page or chatting on MSN. Go meet some real people."
It is true, that too many kids today depend on the online world for their social interaction. The net should augment life, not be life.
-Kyson
I agree that the main reason that so many people from our generation are online alot, is because of the technology advancements. World Wide Web is also a very easy source of communication. Also agree that most people our age are online chating with there amigos.
john
There are people out there who do spend so much time on the internet that they feel that with out the internet that they do resent the lable. There are those that use the internet very wisely and some that use it way to much and those are the ones that can't live without the internet in there life and there are those that don't even use the niternet for that reason is because they think that if they start that they will never be able to stop and that is just fine with me.
Tanner
John I read what you had to say and from what I got I agree! Rebekah
I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH DENA, ON THE FACT THAT THIS GENERATION DOES SPEND ALOT OF TIME ONLINE. SOME PEOPLE SPEND TO MUCH TIME ONLINE FOR PERSONAL STUFF.
TOMMY
We are the online generation, but only because we were givin the opportunity. Past generations didn't have the access to the internet that we do. Most households didn't even have computers until the '90s, and out of those only a few had the internet. The fact that we are posting comments on a web site in a high school English class proves that we are the web generation.
I don't resent that label because it shows how technologically advanced we are. Besides, every generation needs a label and personally I think it's better than the Pepsi generation.
I don't usually spend a lot of time on the internet, I've only had home access since last summer. I don't chat or instant message, and I only occationally e-mail. For me writing on the internet is only a tool for communication with friends and I don't even like to use it that much.
Samantha
I agree more than I disagree in this case, because most of the information stated in the entry is true. We do have more access, and more technology, but I do not necessarily agree that we have more desire to sit in front of the computer and let our day pass us by. I am not online too often; I have a hotmail account and then I also have an account on hi5.com, but I am not on those very often. The only time I really get on the computer for one or both of those things is when I am bored, but usually after logging on you find someone else doing the same thing so you log out and hang out with them. I do not like to think that we are called the MySpace, but we are and that's to bad.
-Leilani
From reading others responses I now see that most of the kids in this class spend a great deal of time on the internet, I’m not saying that I don’t use my computer to get online every once in a while, but I’m not at my computer 24/7 like some are and like some or like some may imply.JARED
I have to say that i happen to really like Myspace and, if you dont, then dont use it, no one is forcing you.
Dena
I agree with Tanner. I think that one of the reasons why our generation is the online generation, is because the technology was not there in previous generations. I'm sure that if it was there, they would be just as bad as us.
Aimey
" if there is ever a question you need answered in a day or so, just post it online, someone usually can help. " Kyson.
I'm going to have to agree with this. If you need help and you have exhuasted the resources the comunity has to offer, fairly easy here (just try to find out what rot13 is in town), it is possible to find information about it online. In cases such as forums, you can have people help you with your specific problem(s). Not just a general catagory that you happen to fall into.
Eric
You can do research with the internet, and view some great sites like indymedia, but most people I know end up getting sidetracked and drooling at some boring "funny pictures" or something stupid like posting inane comments like these. I know I get sidetracked using the internet, but that's why I try not to use it unless I need too. I'm not any better than most people once I get on the internet, so I just make a concious effort to avoid it.
Alex
I agree with Kyson's comment on forums. The internet really is a way to talk with people who may be able to help you. Most of the time there isn't someone in rural Oregon who can help you with obscure hobbies and the internet is a solution to the problem.
Samantha
I agree with Aimey,I do use the computer alot for school though to and it does get boring so i think it is good to have something else to do like check you email or something. Chatting for a long time on the internet makes me feel lazy so i don't like chatting to do it very often.
*Leilani
that is true, but still there people out there that is there hole life is what they do with there friends.
rubin ha ha ha ha
Montana commit is all so right, that there is alot of us how are on the web, but there is some that just us phones to talk and do other thing like work stuff
