A Preview of Technology to be Used

Okay, so here we are about to begin using technology that is unfamiliar to most of you -- Palm brand PDA's. I'm always interested to see how students approach unfamiliar technologies. Some grab it, run with it, and make the most of it. Others seem timid and scared that it will break in their hands, so they never really get much out of it. I reminds me of having my first child and the way I though he was so fragile that I'd break him if I held him wrong. With my latest twin sons being born though (almost 12 years later than the first son), they are lucky if they get any gentle handling from me. They're actually fairly indestructable (the babies, not the Palms), and they can be used and played with and wrestled with.

My point is, if you are afraid of the actual technology, you will likely miss out on some very useful, fun, enjoyable programs and possibilities for your work. I hope you'll take the opportunity to make use of it. It will mean being uncomfortable sometimes, maybe not knowing quite what will work or what to do, BUT it has the potential to be a very powerful tool in your education.

What attitude will you take? In a response to this post, write some of your thoughts about the Palm PDA's that you'll be using this term. Remember to use your first name and last initial only at the bottom of your post. You must make an original comment and then a second that responds to one of your classmates or the teacher's replies.

I think that the palms will help out with the class alot. Being able to type without having to leave your seat is pretty neat.

I think that it is going to be a pretty cool experience working with technology that most of us haven't ever really used. I hope that it makes sense though and itsn't really confusing.

The PDS's are a good idea. Mostly because, a lot of teens dont have access to computers, PDS's, ETC. So it will give us a chance to become atleast somewhat familiar with this sort of thing

I think that it will be helpful once we learn how to use the palms and get used to using them. I think that it's cool that we get this opportunity.

On another note, I plan to use the palms for things other than school assignments. I write during my leasure time at home, so it'll be nice to not have to get out of bed to work.

I am excited to work with a palm pilot, I love to try new technology that will help me with my daily life. And I will try to take advantage of my palm and hopefully use it to my full potential.

It would seem that the PDA would be built with great strength but as we should all know the digital market is not there to help us buy one computer to last even a quater of our life's. As the majority of companys do, things are built to last 6 or 7 years tops and by then technology has left us long behind. I myself will not treat this is a peice of fragile glass but also will not put the limitations of the PDA.

As one person said, "they are expensive", although I will learn by this new experience, I will also have to be cautious unlike anything I have ever used before.

there is no reason to be afraid of them, if you can use a computer like we are all using right now, you can use a PDA. And yeah be careful.

I also agree that the palms will help us be more productive considering the writing on pen and paper really slings some students.

everybody in here worries too much about breaking it. there are a few steps you can take to make sure you dont break it.

1. keep it on your person at all times.

2. dont drop it.

3. dont lend it to anybody.

4. dont let anybody see it.

if you can follow any of these rules then you increase your chances of not breaking it.

Anonymous said...

Yea I hope that I don't break one, but that will make me be careful with it. I'm going to try to use to my advantage.

I think at first it might be a little hard because its different. It will be something that we can get use to. I think they would be fun to use its something that i have never doen before so thats what makes it the more fun its new its something that we would have to work with to get use to.

I think its kind of cool that we get these.. Usually teachers arent very trusting at all of their students..

Well the oportunity to use technology of this kind rarely ever comes to students so, personally I think it is a great oportunity and I will try to make the best of it.

I can't believe that you would be so cautous as to make a list of steps to follow. It you use your common sense the palm will be just fine.
