In your not-so-humble opinion, who is the best character in TKaM?

Now that you've finished what librarians have voted the best book of the 20th century, I want you to tell me why it's such good literature.Specifically, address the following things:

1. Who is the best character in TKaM? Why? Explain yourself.

2. What makes TKaM such an incredible novel to read?

3. What have you learned from reading it?

When you've written your post, include your first name and last initial only at the bottom just like I do at the end of this.

The best character in TKaM is Jem. Why I belive this is because he has grown up so much sense the beginning of the book. Hes acted like an adult and has taken responsabilty. TKaM is an awesome book even if you don't like it it still has some incredible info on what it was like in the 1930's. The reacism that it showed in the book was surprising in some cases. I have learned that not eveyone was happy, or lucky as others. Most people were lucky to have had a maid or a cook. Others like the Ewells or the Cunningham's have to live by a dump, or land that has no profit.

I think Scout is the best character in the book because she is forced to live a certain way due to what her family has to do and she puts up with it and cares a lot about them.

TKAM is such an incredible novel because Harper Lee does such a great job at making it seem real and creating suspense. She brings up real problems in peoples lives and shows the charcters personalities through their actions.

From reading this book I have learned what it was really like in the 1930s. When you read this book you can see what people went through as opposed to having a teacher try to explain it or preach it to you. You, in a way, experience it yourself.

I think the best character in TKAM is Scout. I mean, you never know what this kid is going to do! She's really funny too, just because she's so naive.
This is a great novel because you learn so much about the time period of the 1930's, yet it's not a history book. I LOVE this book because you get so attached to the characters. At the end of the book, you aren't ready for it to end because your used to reading about their lives and you don't want to stop reading.
This book can teach you a lot of things. Obviously about integrity and prejudice. The main thing i got from this is that it doesn't matter what other people are doing, you still act the way you know is right. If your friends are laughing at someone, you don't have to join them. Just like how in the book many people didn't agree with Atticus defending Tom, but he did it anyways because he knew it was right.

In my personal opinion is Boo Radley, because he is like the guy know one knows. Boo also saves the kids in the end of the story, he is a nice guy well seems like it, because he gives little gifts to Jim and Scout.

It takes you back to when racism was really big and how people got along most of the time but not with black people.

I learned that you shouldnt judge someone by what you hear about them in town. People shoutld get along with people and just like people for what their skin color is.

#1 It is scout becouse she is so inocent, she dosent know about human nature and that makes her the best charater in the story

#2 It is a good novel becouse it shows humanity at its best through, a little girls eyes.

#3 That a little girl can get in to a lot of trouble if she listens to her older brother and life can teach you a lot if you take the time to look at the true meaning of it all.

The best character in To Kill a Mockingbird is by far Atticus Finch. He is the best Partially because of his name. It is just so sweeeet. Also, he shows some amazing qualities about himself throughout the book. He has alot of "integrity" as we have talked about in class, he has raised to awsome kids so far, and he is the best shot in Maycomb county. I mean good gosh, he dropped a rabid dog with one shot.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a not only incredible, but fantastic novel to read because it has entertaining characters who do entertaining things. It is one of the few books I read that actualy interested me because it had entertaining characters. The book also deals with prejudice in the 1930's, of which I don't know alot about. So, I got to learn about something new.

1.scout is the best because she like to fight with other people.
2.that boo radly is lock up and that he only comes out when it is dark and that scout and dill and jem are trying to get boo radly out of his house.
3.that you should not judge people by the way they look and that girl can do the same thing as boys can and they can stand up for them selfs.

D'anna M

Calpurnia because she is nice enough to help around the house and cook for atticus, scout, jem, aunt alexandra and cleans the house she is just a maid that likes to help other people.
When Boo Radley takes care of jem and brings him home so that he doesn't get killed and he has been stalking the children in a good way.
I learned that in the book never stalk people because it is a bad influence

1. I think scout is, she stands up for what she belives, and the people around her. she dosn't take crap from anyone, she belives what she belives and she dosn't care what people think.

2. in my opinion this book is not a incredible novel to read. The reson why I think that is, it's not by type of book. I perfer steven king.
3. that there was and still is racism in the south, and all over. And how much there was. Jamie N

1.Jem is because he is the one of the characters that are in the book from the first to the last.
2.In the novel you can see how the people treat other people in the novel.
3.I learned that you should not prejudge other people, and you be nice to everyone. A little girl can get into trouble if she listens to her brother.

I think that the best character in the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" is probably Scout, not because she is the main character, but because she had the most to do with the story and i think she contributed to the most to the book. The author did a great job of making her sound young also. For exaple, when there was a mob of mean that came to the jail when Atticus was there. She was very obvlivious to what was happening but at the same time made the biggest difference.
This is an incredible book because it talks and explains so much about the racism in that time and how society was then. It may not be all about the history of the Scottsboro boys, but as i have learned, more about how people were treated and the book is only based on that event, it isn't all about that event. This book is so good because of what you can learn from it about history and how it can keep you interested and learning at the same time is brilliant.
I have learned about the history of how certain people were treated in that time frame and also how the court system was and how if you were black, you were treated very unfairly. Justice for a black man was pretty much inexsistant and the book shows that to its readers. How the police officer knew about how Tom Robinson was innocent and still took him to court was something to learn from too. If you were black in those days and got charged for doing something, you had no chance. You can learn a lot from this book, but one of the main things i got out of it was how people where so predjuduce, but also how some people still maintained integrity. That is also a big part of this book, intgrity.

The best character in TKaM would have to be Dill. I chose Dill because he seems like the trouble maker and when he comes into the book it's more interesting for me to read. Dill is always trying to find new and odd ways to make Boo come out.

TKaM is "an incredible novel to read" because you actually feel like you are from that time period with the different dialogue and how it's written.

By reading TKaM I have learned more about life in the 1930's and how much prejudice was around back then. Prejudice is an important topic to everyone. Everyone is perjudice about something, whether it be people or things such as shampoo or make-up. I have also learned how people back in the 1930's don't really care about what they do, meaning they don't have a conscience.

1. I think the best character is scout because she doesn't want people to talk about her family in a bad way or she will get into a fight with them. she's also a inocents child and trys to make every thing good that seems good to her.
2.I think TKaM is a good novel because even though it's fiction it shows what the 1930's were like for white and black folks.
3. I have learned that you can't just look at a person and say he's bad or he's good. You have to look a little deeper than just the skin on your body.

I think that Scout is the best character in TKaM. I think that because she goes through some much and she is only nine years old. At nine years old Scout deals with seeing prejudice, she sees hatred toward her family, and hatred toward her father, who she loves so much. I think that Scout is a brave little nine year old girl.

TKaM is a incredible book because it shows you a world that you didn't know existed. You get to see what was going on in the 1930's. This book shows different ways that blacks and white dealt with prejudice.

That life in the 1930's was full of prejudice. It was a hard time for America with the Great Depression going on. I also got out of TKaM that you should always stand up for what you believe in no matter what happens to you.

1. The best character in TKaM, in my opinion, is Atticus. He showed a lot of integrity in the book, and he knows his priorities in life. He is a caring father, a good lawyer, and he realizes what's happening in his time. He realizes that racism is a heated issue, and he knows where cases are headed. He knew already what was going to happen in the Tom Robinson case, but he knew it was his duty to fight the case as much as possible in order to keep respect from his kids. He also loved Scout for herself when Aunt Alexandra wanted Scout to wear dresses and act like a lady. He loved Scout the way she was, and he knew that she liked the way she was. I thought he was the character in the book with the most integrity and courage in doing what was right.

2. It shows you how bad racism really was back then. It shows good relationships even though there are hard times happening. It shows improvement in characters throughout the book. In the beginning it seemed like there was much, much more people against Tom Robinson, so much that they even wanted to kill him, but in the end, even before Tom Robinson was killed, that people were beginning to see a little of Tom's side and what he was feeling. I know not all characters improved (for example Bob Ewell), but it just seemed to me that in the way some of the characters acted after the trial, that they felt slightly different about Tom Robinson. Harper Lee does a great job of letting you know character's true personalities and getting to really know how life was back then.

3. I have learned that you can't really judge someone by rumors you hear. You really can't judge someone until after you have met them and gotten to know them a lot. I also learned that even if you have no chance of winning something, you should still get your opinion through if you have the chance. This novel really shows that you can have good relationships with someone even in dark and hard times.

I think Scout was the best character in the novel. The author puts Scout in situation that a normall kid her age would go through. She always askes questions that I would have when I was her age. In the book Harper Lee has Scout just having fun and enjoying life, while still having questions about her life in that time.
To Kill A Mockingbird is a good novel because it showes how life was like then back in the 1930s. The book showes that people back then where more prejudice then people today are.
Just how different it was back in the 1930s compared to now. If we talked today like they did back then people all around would be offended.

Good work Dakota!

In my opinion the best character in TKaM is Arther Radley. He is the character that keeps the novel going. He's mysterious and you never quite know who he is or what he's like until the end of the book. He is a nice guy who looks out for Jem and Scout but he's misunderstood. I think its really cool how he saves the kids in the end.
What makes TKaM such an incredible novel is how it deals with the issue of prejudice and presents it. The book deals with the serious issue of prejudice but the issue is talked about through the voice of a little girl. The voice of Scout is innocent and she doesn't always understand whats going on. This means that she tells the story how she sees it and doesn't make it bias with pre-set oppinions. When the story is told through her honest voice it makes it all more real and you can really understand and create your own opinion on the subject.
What I've learned from reading TKaM is how awful prejudice was in the 1930's and the horrible things that happen because of people's prejudice opinions. It's amazing how people can condemn someone for something they obviously didn't do based on the color of their skin. Whats even more amazing is how much prejudice was accepted back then. There's a huge difference between the 1930's and today. It shows how much progress we've made toward a better and more fair world.

I really agree with what you said. Atticus is by far the best character in the book. He has done so many amazing things that it's not hard to believe he has the most integrity. The book really interested me too, mostly because of the interesting characters and the trouble that they get into sometimes. TKaM is a really incredible novel. It shows the true personality of characters, and that is what makes the book interesting and funny to read.
