Greetings from Indianapolis!

FOR ALL OF MY STUDENTS...

I suppose that most of you know where Indianapolis is. I suppose that most of you could find it on a map if you didn't know where it is. Well, that's where I am. That's right. From way across the U.S. of A. I hear that it might be snowing there soon (if it's not already). Good for you -- it's almost 65 degrees here.

I just sat in meetings with half a dozen famous authors, including Bell Hooks, Hank Stuever, Ted Kooser, and others. It's great to hear an author speak and get to know a little bit about how they think and talk and interact with us normal, non-famous people.

My question to you guys is this -- if you could meet with, talk to, or sit in a big auditorium and listen to any author you know of, who would it be? Why?????

Here's the assignment:
  1. Responding to this post, click on COMMENTS underneath these instructions.
  2. Read through any other previously posted comments.
  3. Click on POST A COMMENT at the bottom of that whole page.
  4. Write your comment, include your FIRST NAME AND LAST INITIAL ONLY and then click on POST ANONYMOUSLY.
  5. Look at the main post again to make sure yours showed up.
  6. Have a great weekend. You have until Sunday night (midnight) to do this.

Mr. B.

p.s. If you respond seriously (my call) and thoughtfully (my call) to another student's comments, you'll get E.C.

If I could do any of those things you mentioned with any author it would be Patrik F. McManus because he seems to be an average kind of guy with lots of good story's to tell

Let's see if I could meet any author who would it be? I believe I would like to meet Caroline B. Cooney. I just think she writes a lot of wonderful books and I have enjoyed every single one of them that I have read so far. She has a wonderful way of putting her stories to make them more and more interesting. Kady G.

If I could listen to any author speak about his/her experiences I would probably enjoy talking to one of the Chicken Soup for the Soul authors. I think it be neat to learn about their experiences with it and if they ever imagined they would become such a hit. It would be neat to know how they relate to some of the stories they recieve and how being in that line of work influences there life.

I would like to listen to either Orson Scott Card or Stephen Hawking. I enjoy the fictional works of Card, one of his books is currently my favorite:"Ender's Game." Hawking's books, although I've only read one, are very interesting and intellectually stimulating. Where else do you hear about antiprotons and free quarks?

Slightly Off-topic here but who are the authors you posted? I don't think I've heard of them... and you are making me jelous, 65 degrees...now I'm sad

Bell Hooks is a children's book author.
Hank Stuever writes for the Washington Post.
Ted Kooser is the Poet Laureate of the United States.

It's been nice weather so far.
Thanks for the post.

I would like to meet Jon Krakauer. I enjoy his adventure books. I enjoy books based on true adventures. His books like into thin air and into the wild have intrested me for a while. I also enjoy his articles in outside magazine. He is an experienced climber.

WOW! Good question, well I would have to say Jack Wyland, because he writes his books on teenagers with real life issues. You get to see all the pro's & con's, you get to read these suspensful stories about teenagers who go through a lot of the same temptaions, and trials we got through, for example, sex, drugs, eating disorders, alchohol, kids who will do anything for attention etc. The list just goes on. Every book that I have read of his, has been great, I can hardly put the book down once I start. The way he writes the books is really good. Jack Weyland writes his books so no one will get tired of reading them.

I would have to go with Dr. Suese (asuming that you meant ALL authors, not just living) on that one! I mean, is there any child you know of who hasn't read one of his books? Both kids and adults can find joy and comfort in his wacky rhymes. I would love to know what went through his head exactly, how he came up with those stories, and why he came up with those stories. I remember how much i read his books when i was little. I actually started reciting them from memory instead of actually reading them. I would have loved to have met the creator of the books that helped incourage so many imaginations to run wild.

I would have to say Lemony Snicket, because i love the way that he writes his books and i would want to know why he writes his books the way that he does. I would want to know why he choose the "series of unfortunate events" to be his main area of book genres.

I think that I would probably want to meet Anne Frank. She seemed really down to earth and like she would be easy to talk to. She went through a lot of stuff that we are lucky not to have experienced. Anyone my age from that time I would have liked to meet, she's just more well-known.

If I was able to meet any author, I would want to meet V.C. Andrews. I think that she has written some really good books. And there is many books in a series and they all fit together. You never want to put the book down once you start it because it leaves you in a suspense. So you constantly want to pick up the book.

I would also have to agree with Celine that Dr. Seuss is a really good author. He is the all-time, best children book author. Everyone has heard of Green Eggs and Ham, or Hop on Pop. They are classics. Nobody has lived their life to the fullest if they haven't read at least one of his books. So if I could pick another author to meet, I would want to meet Dr. Seuss!!

If I could meet with any author of my choice and talk with him it would be T.A. Barron. Barron has written some amazing adventure and fantasy stories in his day that I reall love. I would just like to sit and talk with him about how he can come up with such a great story like that. Barron uses elements in his stories that ignite the senses of his readers. For example, sometimes while I'm reading his stories I'll talk out loud or get really angry because of something a character in his book did. I think this is an important writing skill to have and I would be fun to acquire it.

I am going to have to agree with Tyler Howland on his interest in meeting with Krakauer. John is an amazing writer and like Tyler said he bases his stories on real life situations. One of the best books I have ever read was Into Thin Air. I think it is because Krakauer has experienced some of these nature elements first hand that makes him a very effective writer of his books. Because he's seen it first hand John can vividly discribe to his readers the events going on.

If I were able to meet any author, I would meet JK Rowling. Her books are popular and I have read all five of them. I really enjoyed each and every one of her books. She seems to have such a good imagination to have thought up all the events that happen in the Harry Potter books. It would be interesting to meet her and to ask her how she thought of the idea of the Harry Potter books.

I think I would want to talk with Louis Sachar. The only book I have ever read by him is Holes, but it was one of the books that I have really enjoyed reading and would probably read again. Also, this book has seemed to be a huge hit to many other teenagers. I think he is a very good author and I would definatly have questions to ask him. He does a really good job of pulling the reader into the book and making them want to keep reading. I'd like to know where he came up with the idea for the book and how he felt about people making a movie from what he wrote.

I would like to meet or listen to J.K. Rowling.
The Harry Potter books that she has written are full of
mystery and adventure and I would like to know more about how she came up with the characters and the setting of the story for the Harry Potter books.

If I could talk to any author I would talk to Tamora Pierce. I picked this author because ever since I was a little kid I have read her books. Her books are one of the reasons why I like reading Fantasy. Even now I still like to re-read her books because I enjoy them very much, even though they are easy to read and I have read them a million times.

If I could meet any author it would be Mark Twain. He had a lot a sarcasm in his book and he wrote about a lot of controversial topics. I think it would be fun to get his opinion about today's world.

if i could meet any author it would be R. Garcia Y Robertson. She writes really well, and the book Knight Errant really kept my interest until the end. It was full of suprizes and you could never tell what was going to happen next. You really could not pordict that book at all, everything was so unexpected. I don't know how you could write such a conplex book? I would want to ask her if she thought out the whole plot or she just played it by ear and had a general idea of how it was going to turn out.

I would meet/talk to Phil Jackson, he is the author of the book I am reading right now, The Last Season, which is about the 2003-2004 season of the LA Lakers. I think it would be awesome to meet one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time and hear his knowledge of the game of basketball.

I would like to talk to John Grisham. He is a great author, has written really good books, and I would like to see how he comes up with all his material. I would also like to listen to Stephen King, and I agree with what Valerie had to say about him. King seems like an interesting type of person, but I think a one-on-one conversation would be awesome with King. For as long as I can remember I have read, and watched the movies based on his books.

I'd love to meet and talk with Lois Lowry, author of The Giver. She wrote such an amazing piece of literature that i truly enjoyed. I would love to talk about the unique symbolism and controversial issues present in that book. I would just love to know some more of her thoughts and ideas.

If I could meet with any famous author I think I would want to meet with Stephen King. He has written many books that have been very successful. I have only read one of his novels and I really enjoyed it. I have watched some of the movies that are based on his books and they are really good. Based on his work, though I dont know a lot about it he seems to be a very good writer. His books are always scary and I would like to know where he comes up with his ideas. Also I have seen an interview done on him and he seemed to be really funny, so I think he would be fun to talk to.

I would have to talk to Robert Jordan. He would be cool to talk to, I would ask him how he come up with all the new magical stuff in all of his books. So far he has something new in all of his books even though the book explanes everything so you think you know everything about that world.

If I could sit and listen to any author talk i would want it to be Ann Rule. I would want it to be Ann Rule because she rights ture stories. True law stories and have happened around La Grande Oregon. Which is cool to read about because of the fact that we live right here and we may not have known some murders that have happened around here and after you read her books, you wonder how a little town like La Grande or Pendleton or Wallowa could be written about. So if i listened to her talk I would want to ask her why she writes true murder stories that have happened in Eastern Oregon, or how she became an author in the first place.
